BUFFALOES
Feeding and nutritional management: efficiency, balance and quality
The buffalo is a polygastric ruminant, like the cow, but with a slower metabolism and greater efficiency in utilising fibre. For this reason, its diet must provide a consistent supply of fibre, balanced energy and high-quality protein, so as to support production, fertility and health without causing metabolic stress.
Feeding plans for each growth stage
Mother’s milk or milk replacer + starter feed and high-quality hay to stimulate early rumen development.
Gradual increase in forage and introduction of a balanced complete feed, with a focus on uniform growth.
High-energy diet, comprising:
- forage (alfalfa, chopped maize, silage),
- concentrates rich in starch and protected fats, maintaining the fibre/energy balance.
A higher-fibre, lighter ration to promote udder regeneration and prevent metabolic disorders around calving.
Feeding techniques
Modern livestock farms use:
- automated feed preparation and distribution systems,
- unifeed systems,
- electronic feed intake monitoring (precision feeding), to optimise efficiency and reduce waste.
