NITROGEN EXTRACTION AND RECOVERY

The LAMBDA Plant

An efficient and innovative solution for the sustainable management of livestock manure and digestate from biogas and biomethane plants.

LAMBDA

The aim: to recover nitrogen from livestock manure

LAMBDA is a plant designed to extract and recover nitrogen from livestock manure and digestate from biogas or biomethane plants. In these effluents, nitrogen is found mainly in the form of ammonia (NH₃) and ammonium ions (NH₄⁺). Through a process of stripping and subsequent absorption, the system separates the ammoniacal nitrogen from the digestate, converting it into ammonium sulphate, a fertiliser that can be reused in agriculture. This process makes it possible to utilise a nutrient already present in the effluent, improving agronomic management and generating a product useful for fertigation.

LAMBDA

Plant layout

The LAMBDA plant comprises several integrated operational units that ensure a continuous and controlled process. These are:

  • digestate feeding and pre-treatment system
  • stripping reactor for ammonia separation
  • scrubber for ammonia absorption
  • sulphuric acid salification station
  • solution recirculation system
  • PLC and sensors for automatic process control.

LAMBDA

How does it work?

The digestate or separated slurry is fed into the stripping reactor, where it comes into contact with process air.

During this stage, the ammonia is separated from the liquid and conveyed to a scrubber, where it reacts with an acid solution to form ammonium sulphate.

The resulting product can be stored or used as fertiliser, whilst the treated digestate has a reduced nitrogen content.

WHY CHOOSE A LAMBDA SYSTEM

Operational and agronomic benefits

The LAMBDA system enables the nitrogen present in livestock manure and digestate to be utilised, converting it into ammonium sulphate, a liquid fertiliser that can be reused in agriculture. This enables the recovery of a nutrient already present in the effluent, making it easy to manage and use in agricultural practices.

The process also helps to reduce the nitrogen content in the digestate, facilitating its management and distribution onto farmland. The plant is designed to operate automatically and is controlled via a PLC, ensuring continuous operation, monitoring of process parameters and ease of management.

Thanks to its efficient design, the system has low energy consumption and can be integrated with biogas and biomethane plants, improving overall waste management and further enhancing the farm’s resources.
