In reality, only farms capable of making the most of every stage of rearing, including replacement, will be able to successfully meet the challenges of the future. Indeed, every stage in a heifer’s life is crucial to the success of the future dairy cow.
REPLACEMENT HERD
Every detail counts
From 7 to 23 months of age, calves move from post-weaning pens to larger group pens, housed in facilities dedicated to the replacement herd.
During the rearing phase, heifers go through a delicate period in terms of health, growth and future reproductive capacity. For this reason, it is essential to monitor:
- Consistent weight gain
- Microclimate and thermal comfort, especially in summer
- Body Condition Score and skeletal development
THE RECOVERY BARN
Optimal solutions
Proper management of the recovery period can make all the difference: up to 800 kg more milk in the first lactation.
That is why Rota Guido offers specific structural solutions for replacement housing:
- A feeding place for every animal: reduces competition and promotes uniform growth
- Fencing and gates: keep the animals contained during cleaning
- Self-locking, anti-choking feed racks, adapted to the animals’ age
- Adjustable cubicles or bedding
The optimal approach involves a mixed solution: an initial phase on bedding (flat or sloped) and a subsequent phase on cubicles, which are also ideal for the buffalo sector. Adjustable cubicles offer:
- Space saving
- Training, facilitating future acclimatisation to the milking parlour
