DESCRIZIONE DEL CORSO: "IL COLOSTRO"
Il colostro ha rappresentato e rappresenta un alimento per il vitello di vitale importanza. È infatti in grado di ridurre i patogeni mantenendo inalterata la flora microbica “buona”, avendo un effetto di lunga durata sul microbiota intestinale. Bisogna però rispettare alcune regole che diventano importanti e strategiche sia per le caratteristiche intrinseche del colostro stesso ma anche per la gestione di questo. Qualità, quantità, temperatura e tempo appaiono strategici per l’accrescimento di vitelli sani e per ottenere una riduzione della mortalità. Verranno altresì affrontati i fattori di rischio associati ad un inadeguato trasferimento dell’immunità passive.

Applied research in calf health management, mastitis control, and improving antimicrobial stewardship on dairies. Examples of calf health management studies include pasteurization of milk and colostrum, housing, and nutrition. Examples of mastitis control studies include selective dry cow therapy, use of rapid culture systems to guide selective treatment decisions during lactation, and bedding management.

Jason Lombard, DVM, MS. Dairy Specialist/Veterinary Epidemiologist. National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS). Dr. Lombard earned his DVM degree in 1993 from Colorado State University. He was in a primarily dairy practice in WI until 2002 when he returned to CO and Colorado State University to being a MS program which he completed in 2004. Dr. Lombard has worked for USDA:APHIS; Veterinary Services since 2003. During his time at USDA, he served as the Johne's disease epidemiologist until taking the posiition of Dairy Specilaist/ Veterinary Epidemiologist within the National Animal Health Monitoring System. His interested include dairy calf management and infectious diseases of cattle.
Jud Heinrichs, Professor of Dairy Science.
Jud is a native of Sullivan County New York, where he was raised on a small Holstein farm.
Jud has been with Penn State since 1982 working in the areas of dairy nutrition and management with an emphasis in replacements; as well as dairy forages with an emphasis on diet particle size and physically effective fiber. Jud's interest in the growth and management of dairy heifers has allowed him to work on several population studies of growth rates of dairy heifers as well as revise the Holstein weight tapes currently used worldwide. He is also a co-inventor of the Penn State Forage and TMR Particle Size Separator.
Jud spent a sabbatical from 2008 to 2009 at the University of Bologna in Italy studying physically effective fiber needs of lactating cows. During a previous sabbatical from 1991 to 1992 with the USDA, he was in charge of the National Dairy Heifer Evaluation Project. He has authored over 135 journal articles and book chapters as well as many extension publications, primarily in the area of dairy replacements and forages.
