When creating from scratch or renovating an existing zootechnical
centre, it is necessary to face peculiar problems, which must be
individually examined, before choosing the fittest solution for each
centre.
It shall be necessary to coordinate in the best possible way the
different competences interacting in the accomplishment of the whole
centre, from the zootechnical competences to the engineering,
agronomic, hygienic-sanitary, organizing and executive ones. These are
very difficult choices to be made, which will certainly play a strong
part in the future development of the whole firm.
For this reason it would be advisable to rely on a partner, whose
reliability, tradition and competence are proved. Rota Guido company
offers a range of high-planned and specialized products, which enables
a correct planning and accomplishment of different types of

for fixed cattlesheds
Fundamentally, cattlesheds are divided into fixed stabling cattlesheds
and free stabling cattlesheds. The equipment for the fixed stabling
cattlesheds are referable to the stalls that can be short or long.

"OLANDA"- AND "AMERICA"-TYPE SHORT STALLS
The "America" stall is a special development of the short stall,
normally used in case of sheds where cattle can pasture. It allows the
contemporaneous release and capture of many animals.

"TICINO"- AND "LOMBARDIA"-TYPE LONG STALLS

for the free stabling
The functionality of the free shed is connected with the arrangement
of the various constituents. In particular, it's obvious that the
different arrangement of the passages, the communicating gangways, the
drinking troughes, the fodder-trough front and the rest areas has a
marked impact on the functionality of the shed and its running
results. The correct manufacture of the different equipment is
therefore an essential factor, but not sufficient, for the best result
that will be assured only if the equipment is correctly arranged
compared to the rooms, the transport and the animals' needs.
FODDER-RACKS

CATCHING RACK
It is essential to assure an easy and effortless examination of the
animals with the possibility of blocking for the periodic treatment
and inspection operations.

ANTICHOCKING RACK
It is the evolution of the catching rack with the difference that it
allows the opening and the release of the animal's head from the lower
part too by preventing the animal from choking in case of fall.
ARCHED CATCHING RACK
It is particularly suitable for horned animals that would have
difficulty in going into the traditional rack.
PREFABRICATED VIBRATED FERROCONCRETE STRUCTURES

FODDER-TROUGHES
The fodder-trough and the rack wall can be made with prefabricated
manufactures suitably reinforced so as to bear the weight of the
covering framework for the feeding and foddering area. The choice of
vibrated ferroconcrete fodder-troughes and beds allows the realization
of self-supporting prefabricated structures that don't require any
other foundations work. The choice of vibrated ferroconcrete
fodder-troughes and beds allows the realization of self-supporting
prefabricated structures that don't require any other foundations
work.

BEDS
The occupation degree of the beds depends not only on the correct
dimensioning, base factor of the solution, but also on the ground
structure, on its looseness and on the design of the stable rails. The
correct mix of these factors assures an exploitation by the animals up
to the expected advantages with regard to the cleanliness of the
animals, a better quality of the milk and the speeing up of the
milking operations.
BASES FOR BEDS
The bases for beds can be made of prefabricated ferroconcrete suitably
reinforced so as to bear the weight of the covering framework of the
rest area. Bases for beds can be "basin-type" for beds with litter or
"with flat floor" for the use of carpets or mattresses.
The choice of vibrated ferroconcrete fodder-troughes and beds allows
the realization of self-supporting prefabricated structures that don't
require any other foundations work.
STABLE RAILS FOR BEDS
The stable rail must be conceived so as to assure the correct
positioning during the rest time and, at the same time, the best
comfort for the animal.

A wide range of stable rails can meet the various stabling typologies,
on litter or mattress, and the different animals.

ADJUSTABLE BEDS
A very interesting solution is the choice of beds for the post-weaning
period and the young breeding cows. Animals like this solution and
learn to know their beds rapidly. For a successful result during this
breeding phase, the stable rails shall be assembled on adjustable
frames so that they can easily adapted to the actual size of the
animals.
UMATTRESSES FOR BEDS
A wide range of carpets and mattesses offers the most suitable
solution for any farm typology and microclimatic condition. The
experience developed allows to clearly characterize the ideal mattress
as:
- soft
- resilient
- disinfectable
- hard-wearing
ROTA SOFTY-MATTRESS

ROTA SOFTY-MATTRESS, is the new mattress, designed and produced by
Rota Guido S.r.l.
It's a new concept of mattress for beds consisting of a very soft base
and a special covering cloth. The base consists of a single mattress
for every bed, with a thickness of 40 mm and a specific density so as
to combine the best softness with a high impact strength.
Thanks to its high resilience it models itself under the pressure of
the animal's body and takes its shape again when the animal moves
away.
The cover consists of a specially conceived single cloth representing
the contact surface with the animal; it is acid- and shock-resistant,
non-deformable, waterproof, with an easy-to-clean smooth surface and a
low abrasive degree so as to reduce the friction lesions.
MULTIPURPOSE STALLS
They shall meet different requirements, it is therefore necessary to
assure their greatest use flexibility. They are essential in every
zootechnical centre organized and managed in a modern manner that
shall be provided with steaming-up stalls, calving stalls, infirmary
stalls, post-calving starter stalls, bull's stalls.

CALVING AND INFIRMARY STALLS
They are usually arranged to house single or few animals. A very
useful feature is the possibility of holding the animal in the rest or
feeding area so as to make the tending and feeding operations and the
litter-making easier.

BULL'S STALL
The bull's stall shall have a corner fodder-trough with catching
device and passage.
The arrangement of the breeding stall is essential for the execution
of the operations in compliance with the operators' safety. A special
and interesting solution of cattleshed for "progeny test" with single
stalls for breeding bulls.

accessories necessary for a correct management. Very useful
accessories are, for instance, the calving-help trolley, the mixer for
the preparation and the distribution of the milk and the calf trolley.

After the conditioning period to the social life, at the age of about
6 months, it is possible to form bigger groups of calves and heifers
housed in shelters with a rest area on litter or beds.

The planimetric arrangement for shelters of these sectors provides for
a rest area on litter (3-6 sqm/head up to an age of about 16 months
and 6-8 sqm/head until the calving) and the feeding area on full
ground with mechanized cleaning, or on split ground.
The catching and antichoking rack has different dimensions (height and
cross distance) according to the age of the animals. The fencing and
the gates as well shall be properly conceived so as to isolate all the
animals during the feeding time simultaneously with the removal of the
litter.

The solution with adjustable beds is interesting because of both the
smaller room needed and its training function; since the beginning, it
assures the full occupation of the beds in the shed of the milch cows
by removing any problem of adaptation.

Home page > Products > Zootechnical equipment for cattle > Equipment
for cow, calf line and "wild state"
The "cow-calf line" farming can be organized with both confined
stabling solutions and wild state solutions.

The sheds for the cow-calf line farming shall keep clearly separate
the areas for brood cows from those for young breeding cows, bulls,
multipurpose stalls; a special importance shall be given to the
calves' stalls where calves are given their necessary food
integration.

The `wild state' stabling solutions have specialized equipment.
- The "Hay-troughes" are necessary to give the animals the proper food
integrations. Their shifting is easier as they can be coupled with the
three-point connection of the tractor.
- The hopper containers for the concentrated fodder are usually meant
for calves. For that reason, they can be either placed in delimited
areas or provided with a barrier preventing the adult animals from
eating the fodder.

Pens and corrals are very important in organizing the farming. They
allow to control, to confine and to catch the animals so as to execute
all the management and control operations on the herd in full
obedience of the operators' safety.

They are made of high quality cast iron and they are easy to clean.
Available with spring or counterweight valve.
CONSTANT-LEVEL WATERING BASINS FOR MULTIPURPOSE AND CALVES' STALLS
They have a ball cock allowing a sufficient flow of water even at low
pressure.

CONSTANT-LEVEL DRINKING TROUGH
Presently, it is the most common drinking trough. It is provided with
connections for suitable water flow, overflow level, bottom drainage
and junctions for its easy installation in the free stabling sheds. It
can be directly fed by means of a ball cock or integrated in a
costant-level system. Available in different dimensions: 60x30 cm for
a single animal, 100x30 cm and 200x30 cm for the contemporaneous
watering of many animals.

COSTANT-LEVEL TIPPING TROUGHES
The constant-level drinking troughes can be installed on a special
support provided with tipping device that allows their easy and
complete draining so as to make the water change and the thorough
cleaning of the trough easier. Usually, the drinking troughes are 1, 2
and 3 m long.

They are fitted with a special high-flow float assuring a fast filling
even when many animals are watering. A special device on the adduction
valve and the possibility of recirculation allow a water availability
even during particularly cold periods.

ANTIFREEZING DRINKING TROUGH
For areas with harsh climate we offer insulated drinking troughes with
closing floating ball that assure the water supply even in case of
freezing external temperature. This solution requires a greater
attention to the control of the hygiene of the water in the trough. It
is advisable to have a parallel line of drinking troughes to be used
when the animals' water need is greater. Available with single- or
two-place.

for the free stabling
Notwithstanding the seeming peacefulness of the cow buffalos it is
necessary to bear in mind their habit of moving together and rubbing
themselves against the barriers that, consequently, must be very solid
and specially designed. The functionality of the shed depends on the
correct realization of the different components, and mainly on their
integration as to areas, movements and animals' comfort requirement,
by making the operators' activity easier.

FODDER-RACKS

The special shape and the dimensions of the neck, the head and the
horns make often the use of catching racks difficult. Two-bar racks,
being the lower bar travelling and adjustable in height, give good
results. This lower bar shall be moved forward so as to assure a
correct positioning in the fodder-trough and to avoid any lesion to
the animal.
VIBRATED FERROCONCRETE STRUCTURES AND FRAMEWORKS

PREFABRICATED VIBRATED FERROCONCRETE FODDER-TROUGH
The fodder-trough and the rack wall can be made with prefabricated
structures suitably reinforced so as to bear the weight of the
covering framework for the feeding and foddering area.

PREFABRICATED BASES FOR BEDS WITH CONTROL BASIN AND FLAT LITTER
The bases for beds can be made of prefabricated ferroconcrete suitably
reinforced so as to bear the weight of the covering framework of the
rest area. Bases for beds can be "basin-type" for beds with litter or
"with flat floor" for the use of carpets or mattresses.

The choice of vibrated ferroconcrete fodder-troughes and beds allows
the realization of self-supporting prefabricated structures that don't
require any other foundations work. It is possible to produce
structures with single or double feeding passages, for rest areas with
2 and 3 bed rows and whole sheds.
STABLE RAILS FOR BEDS AND MATTRESSES
The range of stable rails ROTA STANDARD and ROTA COMFORT can meet the
various stabling typologies, on litter or mattress, and the different
breed and size of the animals.

ROTA SOFT-MATTRESS is the new mattress, designed and produced by Rota
Guido S.r.l.
It's a new concept of mattress for beds consisting of a very soft base
and a special covering cloth.
The base consists of a single mattress for every bed, with a specific
density so as to combine the best softness with a high impact

Accessories for the management of the livestock centre
Because of the difficulty in keeping the cow buffalos in the rack, the
buffalo farming centre needs to have a corral so as to execute the
control operations on the animals in the safest conditions for the

only on the bulk of the animals, but also - and mostly - on the
specific requirements of the farm and the relevant operating routine.
The fences and the gates that can be fixed or opened under certain
circumastances can be designed and realized with specific solutions so
as to rationalize the farming management to the utmost.

Home page > Products > Zootechnical equipment for sheep and goats
The sheep sector is presently going through a period of transition and
renewal. From the old rural practice we are coming to more
professional and organized requirements. We need therefore simple,
prompt, easy-to-apply innovatory technologies. These requirements are
more evident in the milking sector, where tradition is deep-seated and
more settled and the fast and positive attainment of the expected
technological and structural improvements is more important from the
economic point of view, considering the marked trend and the
significant potentiality of the sector to this evolution.
Sheep and goat sector
LAYOUT OF THE ZOOTECHNICAL SHELTER
In order to get a functional running of the farming and a suitable
return, without neglecting the animals' comfort and consequently the
yield, it is necessary to subdivide the sheepfold into the following
functional areas:
stall for animals in production
stall for farming and young breeding animals
feeding area (step)
foddering passage
service gangways and external fences
waiting room to milking
milking room
milk room
post-milking stall
ram's stall
lambing stall
isolation stall
weaning stall
solids storing floors
sewage tank
fodder and hay stores
toolshed
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
STALL WITH REST, WATERING AND FEEDING AREA
A widely used solution provides for stalls on deep litter with straw
or chips (thickness of about 30-40 cm) to be removed about 2-3 times
every year, on the occasion of the land manuring operations.
Multiple stalls are usually adopted as they can house a variable
number of animals according to the size of the farming and its
organization.
- Hot-galvanized steel bearing structure
- Ferroconcrete foundations with string courses that serve as control
walls of the sewage tanks
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
The feeding area consists of a step with sloping floor (about 3 cm)
placed inside the stall between the litter surface and the feeding
rack wall. 80 / 100 cm wide, it is bounded by the feeding rack wall on
the fodder-trough side. The feeding rack, whose cross distance for an
adult head changes from 25 to 33 cm according to the breed, shall be a
"catching" type (available for animals with or without horns), so as
to allow the seizing of the animals by making the treatment and
control operations easier. As to the watering place, the most common
solution is the constant-level basin (standard dimensions: 20x80 cm)
so as to allow the contemporaneous access of two animals without large
amounts of stagnant water.
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
SERVICE GANGWAYS - EXTERNAL FENCES
The external area - very useful - should measure 2,5-3,5 m_/head when
floored, and 5-8 m_/head when ground floor. It is usually bounded by
hot-galvanized steel fences provided with suitable openings, min. 3 m
wide, so as to allow the cleaning means to get in.
The use of the `unifeed' trolley in the sheep and goat farming gave
very good results, for both the recycling of the farm products and the
bigger productions that have been registered in the farmings that used
it first. When, for lack of room, large gangways are not possible, or
when you plan to mechanize still further the farming, it is possible
to use automatic belts with single or double useful side that feed the
different stalls. Powered belts which are available in different
width: 30 cm with wall-mounted single fodder-trough; 60 cm with
central double fodder-trough for animals without horns, 75 cm with
double fodder-trough for horned animals.
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
CONTROL EQUIPMENT
In order to assure the greatest functionality of shelters, especially
in large-sized centres, it is advisable to arrange additional running
structures, such as sorting passages, corrals and passages for health
treatments and examinations. Every corral shall usually hold all the
animals of one stall and have a surface of 0,3 m_/head. It is possible
to provide the corral with a special catching device that overturns
and immobilizes the animal by making all the tending and control
operations easier.
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
MULTIPURPOSE STALLS FOR LAMBING, INFIRMARY, RAMS AND WEANING STALLS
FOR LAMBS AND KIDS
The early weaning in single stalls takes usually place for fattening
males or for twin lambs rejected by their mother.
Practically, they are prefabricated stalls with washable walls to
house the single animal when it needs special attention and care. The
stalls for male animals shall have comfortable dimensions and
arrangement. They are divided into multiple stalls for young animals
and single stalls for adult animals. Lambs are usually weaned by means
of two different ways:
* early weaning in single stalls
* weaning on ground in multiple stalls.
The weaning on ground in multiple stalls is executed in stalls with
wire net partition walls that house groups of about 20-40 lambs.
Sheep and goat sector Sheep and goat sector
MILKING ROOM
The milking system influences the managing and production results of
the farming and it can be:
linear diagonal
rotating
The number of stalls and milking units shall be settled according to
the total heads in production, to the numerousness of the groups of
animals and to the organization of the operators.
For small farmings, milking ramps with 8-12 stalls and 2-3 milking
pails are available, allowing the small farmers to get the advantages
of the milking plant.
For subdivided and/or displaced farmings it is possible to use a
special milking wagon. It is a whole plant, fully assembled on a wagon
drawn by a tractor, that gives all the features and the advantages of
a fixed plant to the farmers that, for logistic problems, have several
groups of animals.

The solutions to different shelters for the pig-farmings may be
various and highly diversified. This is not simply a consequence of
the different productive typologies (closed-cycle or opened-cycle
farmings for the rearing of piglets or fattening pigs, for slaughter
or for industry), but it is mainly a result of the different
zootechnical approaches employed. Anyway, every different solution has
to weigh the planning standards listed below: pigs size, food
requirements, water needs, live weight of the whole piggery,
defecations produced, number of places to be arranged for in the
zootechnical centre, diverse farming areas.

control walls of the sewage tanks
The rapid and unceasing development of farming technologies as well as
the huge genetic advancements have, on the one hand, put at farmers'
disposal a great productive potentiality but, on the other hand, they
have reduced animals rusticity and, as a consequence, they have
obliged farmers to increase controls on environmental microclimatic
standards as well as on hygienic and sanitary conditions.
As a result, shelters, together with their equipment and systems, have
become themselves real factors of production, which are able to
influence the results of the farming activity (both from a qualitative
and quantitative point of view), and which cannot be disregarded in
order not to endanger the economic results of the farming.

Two-layer perimetric covering walls with an excellent insulating power
and complete absence of thermal bridges. External covering
sandwich-board thick. 80 and internal one in Phed thick. 53, perfectly
washable. This kind of solution guarantees the highest hygienic and
sanitary standards.

Polypropylene panelling floors supported by stainless steel uprights
and sections. Equipment for the realization of PVC, Phed and stainless
steel boards stalls, both fixed and openable.

Liquid or dry feeding facilities, with possibility of food
distribution at will or computer-controlled. Stainless steel mangers,
feeders and fodder-troughs, for a correct feeding ration supply. False
ceiling in micropierced fibreglass panelling, which guarantees a
uniform distribution of air, together with the highest comfort for the
animals. Forced ventilation system with clear air coming in from the
loft and air-exchange guaranteed by pipe fans and control computer and
management of the environmental microclimate.

Heating system supplied by warm-air generators, or by `Delta' pipes
with registers and control computers. It is also possible to get
central or local boilers. Combi-cool refreshing systems with direct
vaporization or with evaporating panelling.

STIMULATION, COVERING AND FIRST STAGE OF GESTATION

The equipment for this sector can be substantially referable to the
single cages and to stalls for groups of sows and for boars. Besides
its dimensions, width, length and height, the cage is characterized by
the features of its different components and namely by:
* type of floor: the front part is made of concrete screed,
preferably "hot", while the rear part, about 80-100 cm, has a
grating floor that can be realized with either vibrated reinforced
concrete or galvanized steel or PVC-coated..
* type of external barriers: the side barriers or stable rails can
be made of crude, hot-galvanized or stainless steel, with vertical
round bars or horizontal tubes differently shaped according to
their use. The rear gate can be `blind' or `open', depending on
the presence of split floors in the rear passage and the necessity
to reach the sow easily.
* type of fodder-trough: it depends on the feeding typology, either
`dry' or `liquid' and on any feeding systems.
SECOND STAGE OF GESTATION

An important part of the new regulation pertaining to animals'
welfare, concerns pregnant sows. Important changes regarding space,
flooring, type of stabling and feeding systems have been there
introduced. As far as the type of stabling for pregnant sows is
concerned, cages are abolished throughout the whole period of
gestation. The implementation of the above-mentioned regulations leads
to obvious problems related to the competitiveness within the
different groups of sows, but also to difficulties regarding the
management and the accomplishment of everyday operations of control
and tending of animals. Rota Guido S.r.l., leader in the development
of advanced technologies within the zootechnical farming long since,
has developed a range of equipment and plants particularly suited for
a correct management of sows bred in groups.
FEEDING-STALLS WITH CATCHING SYSTEM FOR SOWS IN GROUPS
They basically consist of cages for pregnant sows and/or young sows,
like the fodder-stalls model, so that the animal is obliged to pass
through them in order to get access to the feed hopper or to the
fodder-trough. Peculiar rocker-arm devices or gates with control
levers, let the animal eat its own ration quietly without being
attacked by higher-ranking sows.
In order to reduce the competitiveness during the feeding time,
special feeding plants have also been arranged for a correct
distribution of feed.
BIOLOGICAL-FIXATION CONTEMPORANEOUS FEEDING FOR SOWS
The contemporaneous feeding system allows sows in groups to eat
quietly and at the same time.

Another interesting solution for sows bred in groups is represented by
the computerized system called CALLMATIC, which can be either employed
for sows on straw, or on solid and/or split vibrated ferroconcrete
floor. CALLMATIC system "food on request" makes possible the
individual feeding of sows bred in groups. This type of farming, if
well organized, is highly beneficial to animals, since it put at their
disposal a wider space, which, together with the individual food
distribution, consistent with the needs of each sow, guarantees a
homogeneous growth of the animals as well as positive after-effects on
the brood.
FARROWING SECTOR

The typology of cages, which are distinctive equipment in this kind of
sector, must be chosen according to the zootechnical aspects and to
the structural and dimensional features of shelters. The `linear'
solution, for example, is suitable for the farrowing and the suckling
only, while if the cage shall be used also during the weaning, a
`transverse' solution is certainly recommended. In this latter type of
cage sows are positioned diagonally, within it. More recently, by
following the requests of animalists who have difficulties bearing the
idea of animals put into cages, where they cannot behave in a natural
way, a different typology has been developed, according to which, the
sow remains in the cage only for some days after the delivery, and
they are then allowed to perform the suckling out of the cage, since
the piglets are protected by railings and escape gangways.

The cage is not only distinguished by the position of the sow, but
also by some peculiar components: the typology of the external
railings, the barriers of the sows' stalls, the different
fodder-troughs for sows and piglets, the nursery, the water and
electric plants placed on the side of each cage, and also the typology
of the ground. Actually, this makes often the difference, since it is
crucial for the comfort of animals, for the good standard of
cleanliness, but also for the reduction to a minimum of the crushing
among animals.

Detail of bottoms of cages with polypropylene panels on stainless
steel-bases suited for piglet pens and cast-iron level surface for
sows' stall, or with original "Tenderfoot" round plastic-coated
panels, with nursery areas equipped with heating plates.

WEANING SECTOR
This is certainly the most delicate sector of the whole farming. In
fact it is intended for the sheltering of particularly stressed
piglets, because of both their parting from their mothers and their
transportation and further allocation to a new place. As specific
sector, it is present only when the farming technology provides for
the use of the delivery area just for the period needed for the
suckling.

EQUIPMENT FOR THE WEANING SECTOR
They are basically represented by raised cages or by stalls on ground.
The building typologies of the different components (floor, side
railings, fodder-troughs and plants) have to be developed according to
the peculiar requirements of each farming. Some innovative solutions
related to emerging techniques for an `early weaning' are much
interesting. By arranging a restricted area with a warm floor, it is
possible to guarantee very young piglets with high comfort conditions

It should also be noted the new solutions regarding the outdoor
weaning, within self-supporting specialized sectors.

By arranging rest areas, conveniently sheltered and with a controlled
temperature, it is possible to offer piglets ideal conditions, either
during their rest, or when they move according to their behavioural
needs and in order to eat. It is worth noting that with a lower
temperature within the shelter, piglets increase their feed-intake,
which is then assimilated thanks to the ideal temperature in the rest
area. In this way it is therefore possible to obtain considerable
energy savings, as a result of smaller warmed up volumes, together
with higher preservation indexes of the components, which greatly
reward the investment and the control operations.
FATTENING SECTOR
They house pigs weighing from 25-35 kg till the final weight, for a
quite long period (6 to 7 months), during which the space and
microclimatic requirements change considerably. Stabling can be made
up of multiple stalls with completely or partially split ground..

Equipment for the fattening sector are basically represented by the
barriers of each stall and by fodder-troughs. The barriers delimiting
the stalls can be blind, totally open or with a blind base. The choice
of one of these different solutions, depends on many aspects: easy
visual control, transport of animals, easy accomplishment of
refinements, without being obliged to carry out even more expensive
and difficult brickworks, and the chance to use barriers as partition
walls within double fodder-troughs by fixing them on pre-existing
structures, without having to move the animals.

Fodder-troughs are available either for dry feeding, with stainless
steel or PVC hopper containers, suitable for a feeding-on-demand,
whether meal or pellet, single-place or multi-sections, or for liquid
feeding in troughs. Available fodder-troughs are made of stainless
steel, of every length, single or double, with one or two channels.
For the installation, you can either use the additional concrete
casting or the direct bolting by means of stainless steel clamps.

FARMINGS ON LITTER AND PLEIN-AIR
The even more evident recognition of the agronomic employment as the
sole and real solution to the disposal of livestock sewage, has set
more limits to sewage production, which, even if easily disposable
with suitable structures and special disposal plants, proves to have
consistent effects on the environment, and whose employment, most of
all in very vulnerable areas where there is a greater risk of
percolation and layers' pollution, has to be carefully performed.

On the contrary, there are no specific problems for the employment of
manure. This is certainly a consequence of its favourable contribution
to the improvement of the land fertility, and also to the
impossibility that fortuitous events could lead to run-off,
percolation, or consistent environmental inconveniences. This is the
main reason why litters are enjoying a great favour within piggeries,
even if they had been abandoned mainly as a consequence of consistent
management expenses, related to the employment of straw as well as of
labour. The `new' piggery solutions, studied for the different farming
sectors, guarantee farmers the chance to overcome these inconveniences
and to resort to them even within specialized large-sized farming.

In this latter type of farming, the higher costs related to the
employment of litter and labour are certainly counterbalanced by
appreciable savings as a result of the lower thermal requirements of
the animals which, if sheltered on litter, have lower critical
temperatures than the minimum ones.

The oxidative processes, which take place on the litter, offer animals
a warm bed, even to piglets just weaned, without being obliged to make
use of any artificial heating system. Nowadays, it is possible to
resort to widely proven solutions for the gestation, delivery,
weaning, rearing and fattening sectors.

OUTDOOR FARMING
The increased sensibility of people towards animals' comfort and
everything bearing the definition of `natural', together with the
opportunity to go into a farming by means of quite low investments in
equipment and plants, has aroused a growing interest in outdoor
farming even in our country. The success of this type of farming is
related to a sufficient availability of land, with good exposure and
ideal drainage, together with the employment of equipment capable of
assuring both the protection of animals from atmospheric agents and an
easy execution of the different tending and control operations.

Liquid-feeding plants
The liquid-feeding plants provide for the wholly automatic preparation
of the feedstuff according to the energy requirements, starting from
staples or from full feed, with the possibility of using by-products
with the consequent reduction in the ration costs.
HYDROMIX
SANITATION - Essential condition for a better food conversion
As regards the sanitation, it is common knowledge that the liquid feed
contributes to the microbes' growth. An intensive work of research and
development led to plants whose health conditions are optimum and
capable of assuring a top sanitation. To that end our feeding plants
are provided with:
1. pneumatic inlet throttle valve
2. rinsing of pipes and valves
3. tank cleaner with revolving heads
4. sprayer for disinfectant solution
5. dust remover

Waste-free feeding with rinsing of pipes and valves
At every feeding time, all feed is distributed without waste. Then,
the whole system together with valves, feed inlet and outlet, pipes,
mixing tank and used-water tank are perfectly rinsed with clean water.
Between two feeding times, pipes are full of clean water that will be
pushed into the used-water tank and recycled for the mixing and
preparation of the next rations.

HYDROMIX COMPACT
Computerized liquid-feeding plant with compact design that allows the
contemporaneous mixing and distribution of the feed, this reducing the
waiting time between two distributions. The main advantage of this
plant is that many animals can be fed very quickly and with different
rations. The waiting time between two feed distributions is zeroed and
the time needed is halved compared to a standard plant.

Feeding computer MC 99 NT
The good result of the pigs' fattening stage requires a high precision
at all levels, from the feed mixing to the data storage. All our
liquid-feeding systems are computer-controlled and -aided so as to
adjust and to optimize the feeding curve and the conversion index.

Thorough cleaning of the tank
The tank washing system allows a totally automatic and thorough
cleaning of the mixing and used-water tanks. The revolving heads of
the washing system, provided with special nozzles, comply with the
available water quantity and its pressure, thus assuring a perfect
cleaning even with a very small quantity of water.
The water supply to the cleaning heads is assured by a separate pipe
provided with a pump. In order to assure a faultless working, the tank
is totally watertight and the feed intake is controlled by a pneumatic
valve.
The pneumatic diaphragm valves allow a high dosing precision and offer
wide installation possibilities. Irrespective of the type of system
and feed, our feeding valves are always reliable and long-lasting.
CALLMATIC

Liquid feeding with Callmatic
In the computer-controlled system for the liquid feeding on request,
the swill flows in the pipeline over the feeding station. When the
system senses a sow that has not eaten yet, the valve opens and the
set quantity of feed is poured into the trough. This process is
repeated until the sow has received its ration. A sensor in the
distribution tank signals when the tank is empty and then the system
starts mixing a new ration. At the end of the feeding time, the tank
is automatically washed. It is also possible to distribute two
different feed with a second tank and a second circuit.
HYDRO JET
The perfect plant for the liquid feeding of the piglets after their
weaning.

HydroJet is a computer-controlled liquid-feeding plant for piglets
provided with sensors that allows the distribution of many small
rations of fresh feed many times every day, thus reducing the waste
drastically. By this type of plant, the warm swill, resulting from a
constant temperature adjustment by means of (multi-stage) feeding
curves, is conveyed to the trough and carefully rationed by means of
compressed air, without leaving waste in the mixing tank and pipes.

FERMENTATION

By this process, the feed can be subjected to the fermentation in a
separate tank before its distribution to the piglets, so as to give
the animals a more digestible feed because of its high lactic acid
content, low pH and predigested starches; this allows increases in the
animals' weight and more healthy piglets.

In the piggeries, besides the important feeding role of the water, it
is necessary to consider the crucial role of its correct supply in the
waste control and consequently in the volume of the produced sewage
that contributes to define the environmental impact of the farming.
Possible solutions for the watering:
SUCKER DRINKING-TROUGH: it is certainly the most common trough, with
its different typologies and size. It is available with 3/8" - 1/2" -
3/4" fittings, provided with the relevant clutches that can be fixed
or adjustable in height.

CUP DRINKING-TROUGH: it has been conceived to reduce waste, to assure
an easy watering and good health conditions. For that reason, the cup
has a moderate size and, in some models, it is protected by a flap
that prevents the defecation.
NO-WASTE DISPENSERS: by means of this system the sewage is limited to
the quantity actually produced by the animals. For that reason, they
collect the watering waste, they pipe it outside through a special
network to the drainage as "storm water".

DOSATRON: it is a medicine dispenser, necessary to assure an
accurate and safe dosing in the drinking water. Assembled in the water
pipe with special by-pass, it measures out the product in the animals'
water.

The rapid and unceasing development of farming technologies have put
at farmers' disposal a great productive potentiality. As a result,
shelters, together with their equipment and plants, have become
themselves important factors of production, which are able to
influence the results of the farming activity (both from a qualitative
and quantitative point of view), as well as to grant a rational and
profitable running of the whole farming.

SHED INTERIOR
The cage is the microhabitat where rabbits breed and grow up. It is
therefore important that each cage offers animals the most suitable
habitat possible, together with an easy carrying out of the farming
"manual operations", from the control of the animals to the cleansing
operations.
SPIRAL AUTOMATIC FEEDING
Food is taken out from silos by means of motor reducers and auger
conveyors. Then it is dropped into the loading hoppers, placed at the
beginning of the row, where further conveyors provide to stoke up each
feeding trough.

"PLEIN-AIR" CAGES
These cages have been properly planned for the outdoor farming. Each
side of the cage is covered by 40mm sandwich panels, whose pre-painted
plate together with its highly insulating interposed polyurethane foam
guarantee a good comfort to animals. The "bonnet-like" opening of the
doors, for tending and control operations, can be either manual or
automated.

When speaking about the overall features of the different livestock
shelters, it appears to be very important, for the success of whatever
farming,
it appears clear how much important it is, in order to guarantee the
highest success to one's own farming, to provide animals with the best
environmental conditions possible. The various factors which
contribute to determine the environment, can be divided as follows:
* climatic conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity and
speed of the air;
* quality of the air, as to the presence of noxious gas and dust;
* non-climatic conditions, such as stalls quantity, space per head,
flooring type and overall equipment. All these different factors
interact with one another, thus influencing the animals' good
health and their ensuing performances substantially.

Home page > Products > Environmental conditioning plants > Natural
ventilation
The air within each shelter can be changed by means of two main
systems: natural and forced aeration.
ENVIRONMENTAL MICROCLIMATE CONTROL PLANTS
NATURAL VENTILATION
It is guaranteed by the different density existing between the
indoor-air (warmer) and the outdoor one (colder) . By means of a
ridge-opening and side openings, placed at a lower level, it is
possible to get a natural circulation of the air coming in through the
windows and going out through the ridge-opening.

Besides the different temperature existing between internal and
external air, wind as well contributes to float the air around. Of
course, it is important that the shelter's location and its
orientation, as well as the control of its openings, guarantee a
synergic exploitation of both climatic factors.

In order to avoid the likely inconveniences related to this type of
ventilation, lots of devices have been conceived, when proceeding to
the building phase:
the arrangement of deflectors near the openings, in order to reduce
the negative effect of the wind, mainly in winter;
the realization of doors and windows (for both windows and the small
dome), easily adjustable and mechanized by means of an automatic
control unit.

The natural ventilation system shows some drawbacks due to the heavy
influence that the external climatic conditions have on the air
conditioning; as a consequence, this system is mainly suitable for
shelters where the concentration of animals is not so huge and,
preferably for adult animals, which are less sensitive to climatic
changes. The main advantage of the natural ventilation compared to the
artificial one, is related to its reliability and to its limited
dependence on the employment of energy.
When it is necessary to guarantee a perfect airtight, it is possible
to turn to wasistass-type and false frames windows, with the addition
of an artificial ventilation system.

ventilation for milch sectors
ARTIFICIAL VENTILATION FOR MILCH SECTORS ( cattle - buffalo and
goat-and-sheep ones)

Fans in the milch cow sheds enables a reduction of the stress derived
from the heat, thanks to the improved speed of the air at animals
level. They can either be installed on the walls, thus influencing the
volume of air change, or within the shelter itself, where they
guarantee a satisfactory ventilation, both in the feeding area and in
the rest one.

In order to enhance the positive effects resulting from the artificial
ventilation, it is necessary to adopt a cooling system for the
animals. In the light of experience, the most effective solution has
proved to be the wetting of the animals at intervals. The programmed
alternation between the opening of the wetting-valves and the
artificial ventilation system allows to cool the animals by
evaporation, thus enhancing food consumption and reducing their stress
considerably.

It would also be advisable to consider the arrangement of
air-conditioning systems in the waiting rooms, where different
solutions, depending on the peculiar needs, can be adopted: simple
ventilation, cooling by means of direct wetting of animals or by a
cooling system which, thanks to a special fan wheel micronizing water,
is able to cool the whole indoor area, thus avoiding serious stress,
which would lead in a very short time to a reduction of the
production.

ARTIFICIAL VENTILATION FOR SLAUGHTER SECTORS (pig and
poultry-and-rabbit ones)
It guarantees the volumes of the air change, independently of the
external climatic conditions. Therefore, it is the best advisable
solution, whenever the maintenance of well-distinct microclimatic
conditions, and, above all, the elimination of sudden changes in the
temperature are essential to assure a positive result of the farming.
This is even more important for those sectors sheltering animals in
their most delicate periods, that is delivery and weaning. Air change
can be either obtained `under pressure' (or positive pressure, or
inlet), or in depression (or negative pressure, or extraction); these
two solutions have different specific aspects, which must be
thoroughly considered when chosen.

Air change is guaranteed by extractor fans, which create a slight
depression within the shelter and cause the external air to come in
through suitable deflectors-distributors. It is the most common
solution, and it is usually able to meet the different sectors
requirements. Actually, its optimization, as to either microclimatic
conditions or limitation of the consumption of energy, requires a
significant experience and attention.

A correct diffusion of the air, together with a careful control of the
air change are required in order to avoid over-ventilation phenomena,
with ensuing energy waste which, as it has already been observed, can
become very serious (they can even double the heating costs).
Consequently, extraction groups have been studied for an installation
on both the walls or the roof, with the chance to get the air either
from the environment or from under the pits.

Vent pipes with intake from both underpits and the environment grant
the correct diffusion of the air even within large shelters. By
adopting false ceilings made of micro-pierced fibreglass sheets model
`Diff-air' and/or deflectors with adjustable and properly calibrated
air vents, it is possible to provide animals with a perfectly uniform
environment.

The whole environmental conditioning system is duly controlled by a
computer, which guarantees the correct maintenance of the
microclimatic standards. This computer is provided with an alarm
system which comes automatically on in case of blackout or thermal
irregularities.

COOLING
In order to control the high summer temperatures, in particular when
added to a low relative humidity of the external air, it is possible
to exploit the drop of the temperature following evaporation.

For extraction plants:
* evaporating panels to be arranged on the air-intake openings;
* vaporization of water in the air change passage.

For pressure plants:
humidification of the changed air within an adiabatic caisson and
further diffusion in the environment;
direct humidification of the air change by means of a specific
centrifugal vaporizer, which can be placed outside or into the
ventilation tunnel.

COMBICOOL
It is a computerized system, planned to cool, humidify, and wet pigs
by means of a high-pressure vaporization. It can be used to humidify
the air within the piggery, thus assuring an ideal humidity, and also
reducing the formation of dust and increasing, as a consequence, the
comfort of the animals.
This plant can be used as well for a preliminary wash, before
performing a complete cleaning. The special stainless steel spray
nozzles are characterized by slow passage-intervals, but also by a
high vaporization-speed which create a very light mist, that spreads
homogeneously over the whole area.

HEATING
The heating system is essential to maintain a satisfactory thermal
level, whenever the heat produced by the animals themselves is not
enough to counterbalance heat losses due to the shelter's surfaces as
well as to the ventilation. This situation usually takes place in
winter, within delivery and weaning sectors, and sometimes even in the
gestation ones, as a consequence of the low concentration of animals.

Among the different heating systems, the most widespread one is based
upon the centralized production of warm water and the arrangement of
radiators or fan heaters in every room, so as to adjust the heat
supply independently in every single area. It should be noted the use
of finned tubes or aluminium alloy Delta tubes that guarantee
cleanliness, an easy installation and use flexibility as they can be
used either for pre-heating the air within passages, or directly
within the single rooms, where they transmit heat both by convection
and by irradiation.

Natural gas or LPG heating devices are also available. They do not
need any air intake, and they guarantee a good return, without heat
losses and at relatively moderate costs.

Cattle and Buffalo sectors
The manure removal plants from the shelter assure the possibility of
removing the manure in the passages or in the ditches totally and
frequently, without any dilution and with the lest possible labour.

Closed-circuit chain belts for fixed stable, for riding grounds or
also for the collecting and the formation of the heap on the floor,
the strawy manure in free stables, with use of straw and production of
dung.

Revolving forklifts loaded by alternated belts and thrust unit in oil
bath.

Horizontal presses for the removal of the manure from the stable and
the formation of the heap on the floor. Suitable for both fixed and
free stables.

The chain scrapers can be used for the cleaning of the feeding and
sliding passages between the beds and the external paddocks. They
consist of an engine block, four idler wheels and a closed-circuit
chain that usually operates the two scraping shovels.

The rigid rod scrapers consist of a draw bar operated with a constant
reciprocating motion by an oleodynamic cylinder and station. The
scraping unit can have straight, tipping or butterfly shovels, applied
onto the central draw body by means of a coupling system on the
powered rods and automatic reversal.

The alternated mechanical head belt conveys the manure coming out of
the stable to the collection tank through a 70-cm ditch. It consists
of a rigid rod with steel stakes and blades operated by an oleodynamic
unit.

The recirculation under the split floor allows to pump away the
suitably treated sewage from the stable to the next treatments or
directly to the storage.

The `Flushing' system allows to remove the manure from the passages
(that shall be sloping). The previously treated sewage is flushed and
recycled by storing it after a separation treatment.

This solution is particularly interesting for the prewash of the
waiting-milking areas.

Home page > Products > Sewage disposal plants > Solution for the pig
sector
The solutions for the removal of the manure from the pigs' shelters
can be substantially referable to:

Continuous overflowing.
The more solid part of the dung that floats because of the anaerobic
fermentation gases, runs over the liquid layer below until it
overlfows.
Recycling.
Recycling by pumping the suitably treated sewage into a ditch under
the split floor.

Cyclic drainage.
It consists in collecting the liquid manure into the pits for a while
and in removing it periodically, as soon as the quantity is enough to
assure the removal of the whole mass. This is important so as to avoid
that the bottom of pit is cluttered with too many residues whose
removal could require a direct intervention.
Mechanical removal by scraper.
The installation of a mechanical scraper on the bottom of the pit
assures the removal of the `fresh' dung. This can be interesting in
case of next energy recovery treatments and for a reduced development
of noxious gas for the environment.

LIFTING AND PUMPING STATION
The whole equipment required for the lifting and the conveyance of the
liquid manure to the storage and the ensuing disposal stages. The
distinguishing component is the pump with its specifications of
delivery, discharge head, power and its availability of accessories
for the various special operations, that, if correctly dimensioned and
installed in the plant, makes the plant crucially reliable since it is
specially conceived to dispose of a difficult product because of the
variable level of solids and the high corrosiveness on metals. Cardan
joint or electrically powered pumps are available.

Tank mixer.
Mixer for underground tanks with arm from 4 to 8 m long and mixer for
aboveground tanks up to 6 m high.
Slalom mixer.
It allows the mixing of all undersplit pits from a single place.

External or submerged electrically powered grinding - stirring
devices.
They are intended for fixed plants that can be automatically operated,
with programmable control boards.

Vertical grinding pumps with cardan joint or external electric motor
on the sewage's surface.

Tearing pumps for strawy and thick sewage with external and submerged
motor.

High-delivery flushing pumps with flow intended for installation in
the washing circuit of the different passages or waiting areas.

Pumps for sewaging.
They are suited to convey the sewage further away, for underground
fixed plants and also for self-propelled irrigators.
CONVEYANCE LINES AND ACCESSORIES

They consist of the PVC, hot-galvanized steel and stainless steel
fittings and pipes which are crucial for the spreading and the
conveyance of the sewage from the pre-tank to any ensuing treatments
and to the final storage.

Ladders, balconies, gangways and trestleworks allow to reach the
various equipment for the treatment and the visual check of the state
of storage. Hot-galvanized steel or stainless steel models are
available; they can be mass-produced or upon specific design so as to
be applied onto any kind of reservoir.

The floodgates are essential to intercept the sewage for the
collection from the reservoir. The following models are available:
wall-mounted, safety and with float valve.
The float valve is particularly useful so as to make the collection
easier in case of external drainage well.
SOLID - LIQUID SEPARATION
The solid manure separation is a widespread treatment as it assures
some interesting environmental advantages in the sewage disposal. The
solid-liquid separation consists in removing the solid particles from
the sewage, thus obtaining two contents: a substantially solid one
that can be shovelled and piled up on the floor and a totally liquid
one.

The achievable managing and environmental advantages are significant
as the liquid content is characterized by:
1. easy-to-run (less clogging problems or obstructions during the
operations of removal, pumping, recovery in the piling reservoirs and
sewaging spreading);
2. good fluidization that allows to use low-power equipment and to get
a better mixing, in particular in large-sized reservoirs;
3. less content of nitrogen and, above all, phosphorus (bigger volumes
that can be spread on cultivations);
4. significant reduction of foul smells given off during the storage
and the spreading;
5. smaller volume (smaller capacity of the storing reservoirs);
6. reduction of phenomenon of the leaf stain during the covering
spreading;
7. reduction of the NH3 emissions in the atmosphere thanks to the
faster penetration in the surface layer of the land;
8. the resulting solid content can be used in agronomy as amender or
it can be subjected, together with other products, to a composting
process.

Sewage separator "ROTA 2000", wholly manufactured of stainless steel,
with the following specifications:
Required power 1,5 Kw for the sorting drum and the pressing cylinders.
Dimensions:
Height: 1625 mm
Width: 2040 mm
Length: 1800 mm
Sorting drum: Ų 630 mm
Round perforation: 1,5 - 2 - 2,5 mm
Roller chain operation.
Pressing cylinders with special fibre-reinforced rubber.
Adjustment by weight with pressure spring.
Safety device for foreign bodies with overload switches.
The solids are removed by the sorting drum, made of stainless steel
perforated plate, that, suitably reinforced, revolves thanks to three
internal cylinder which are rubber coated with Teflon side stops. The
liquid content seeps in the roller through the drum holes and it
collects in the lower hopper from which it reaches the storage; the
solid content keeps on the external surface of the drum. Then two
special pressing rollers with adjustable force press it so as to
further reduce its humidity and to assure a "dry" product with a high
percentage of dry matter. A special steel blade remove from the drum
the thickened solid content that is carried on a conveyor, on a wagon
or directly on the storage platform below.

Worm-wheel separator provided with:
special steel auger;
stainless steel cylinder for sieve and division;
exhaust cone with suspended loading and value scale;
fastening frame for the installation on ground or on a movable
platform;
T-inlet;
discharge mouth;
gearmotor with star-delta switch 4 KW, 400 V / 690 V 50 Hz;
distance between dividing heads 0,5/0,75/1,0 mm
grey cast-iron inlet body.
The ROTA separators have a high hourly production, top working
reliability, exceptional performance of separation of the solid matter
and they don't require any special maintenance.

The possibility of installing the separator on a truck allows to use
it in many farmings, by making the advantages resulting from the
separation process available for the small-sized farms too.
DEODORIZING AND OXYGENATION

The emission of bad smells is mainly the result of the fast processes
of fermentation and degradation of the most putrescent content of the
sewage organic matter by means of several microorganisms. To avoid the
formation of the bad smells it is therefore necessary to carry out
treatments capable of speeding up the degradation of that part of the
organic matter so as to get a product where only the so-called "slow"
processes are active. The treated product is almost odourless as the
fermentation activity is minimized and consequently any smelly
compounds are given off. The sewage stabilization can be obtained
either by aerobic or anaerobic treatments.

The aerobic treatment with Mixer - aerator of submergible and
self-aspirating type, allows the even oxygenation at the various
depths - a particularly interesting feature for sewage subject to a
greater sedimentation (pigs' dung) - and a little formation of aerosol
during the functioning. The forced oxygenation for the
nitre-denitrification process allows to get the reduction of the
nitrogen content in the sewage and it is therefore very interesting
for all vulnerable areas.
COMPOSTING
The composting is a controlled organic process of mineralization and
partial humidification of the organic matter that takes place in
presence of oxygen. It is different from the natural process of
decomposition of the organic matter, which is represented by various
natural examples (wood litter, manure), because of its greater speed
and the considerable heat production. The final product (compost) has
the typical physical-chemical characteristics of an amender, that can
change according to the process duration (maturity degree). This
solution is of great practical interest especially in those areas
where the excessive load of dung per surface unit leads to the search
of solutions capable of assuring a more `easy-to-manage' product, both
inside and outside the farm, i.e. that can be suitably conveyable far
away.

Glasshouse with hot-galvanized steel framework and translucent plastic
coverings provided with composting plant with reactor treatment and
horizontal pit equipped with automated mixer, sliding on tracks
situated on the top of the side walls of the reactor.
Working windrow-grinding wagon for the composting treatment on very
wide open areas.

We have been developing systems for the energy production by means of
renewable energy sources for years. Biogas belongs to those energey
sources. Thanks to the new regulations about self-production, to the
recognition of the environmental value of the energey production from
renewable sources and to a proven technology, today it is possible to
produce biogas for the cogeneration of heat and electricity under
advantageous conditions. The Material and Environment Research Centre
of ENEL (National Electricity Board) together with the Animal
Production Research Centre in Reggio Emilia, conducted, at the
beginning of the Nineties, a large-scale research in the Po valley
about the potential of the biogas that can be produced from the
zootechnical sewage. The research revealed that the cogeneration of
electricity and heat by means of biogas can lead to evident advantages
in both the energy and the environmental field. The cogeneration can
fit suitably in farm engineering, especially when special works are
required to meet the more and more pressing normative obligations
about the sewage disposal. The purpose is to promote the biogas as a
renewable energy source by pointing out the normative and
technological elements so as to allow a realistic and useful view of
the biogas use in the modern zootechnics.

THE BIOLOGICAL PROCESS OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
The anaerobic digestion is an elaborate biological process by which,
in the absence of oxygen, the organic matter turns to biogas (or
biological gas) consisting mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. The
percentage of methane in the biogas changes according to the organic
matter and to the process conditions, from a minimum of 50% to about
80%.
To make the process possible it is necessary that many groups of
microoganisms turn the organic matter into intermediates, mainly
acetic acid, carbon dioxide and hydrogen that can be used by the
methane microorganisms that end the process by producing methane. The
anaerobic microorganisms have a slow growth pace and a slow reaction
pace; it is therefore necessary to keep the optimum conditions of the
reaction environment, as far as possible. Nevertheless, the process
time is relatively long compared to other biological processes; but
the advantage of this process is that the complex organic matter is
turned into methane and carbon dioxide, that is to say that its final
production is a renewable energy source in the form of a high-grade
combustible gas. In order to allow the contemporaneous growth of all
necessary microorganisms, the reaction environment, usually called
digester (or anaerobic reactor) shall be able to combine the different
requirements of every microbic group. For instance, the optimum pH is
about 7/7.5. The optimum process temperature is around 35°C in case of
mesophylic bacteria, or around 55°C in case of thermophilic bacteria.
The following bacteria take part in the process:
* hydrolithic bacteria that break the biodegradable macromolecules
into more simple substances;
* acidogenic bacteria that use the simple organic matters liberated
by the hydrolithic bacteria as substrate and they produce
short-chain organic acids that represent the substrate for the
next bacteria;
* acetogenic bacteria, obligate hydrogen producing acetogens (OPHA),
that use the products of the acidogenic bacteria as substrate to
produce acetate, hydrogen and carbon dioxide;
* homacetogenic bacteria that synthesize the acetate starting from
the carbon dioxide and the hydrogen;
* methanogenic bacteria divided into two groups:
a) those that produce methane and carbon dioxide starting from
acetic acid, called acetoclastic bacteria;
b) those that produce methane starting from carbon dioxide and
hydrogen, called hydrogenotrophic bacteria.
While the methane is liberated almost totally as a gas because of
its little solubility in water, the carbon dioxide takes part in
the balance of the carbonates in the biomass under reaction. The
different bacterial species have close interactions and the
products of the metabolism of some species can be used by other
species as substrate or growing factors.

INFLUENCE OF THE QUALITY OF THE SEWAGE TO BE DISPOSED ON THE YIELD IN
BIOGAS
The overall sewage biodegradability analysed at the sewers collection
tank can considerably change, between 60% and 80%, according to both
the sewage `age' and the feeding type. An other classification of the
biodegradable contents allows to distinguish between a readily
biodegradable fraction (about 20% of the SSV) and a more slowly
biodegradable one within the soluble content, and between an easily
hydrolyzable suspended fraction and a slowly hydrolyzable one within
the suspended content.

If we apply the values of the previous table we can reckon, by way of
an example, the following yield of cogenerated biogas and energy
referred to the average values per product unit:
Data resulting from long-term lab tests, under normal conditions of
the anaerobic reactor and with limited hydraulic residence times,
reach transformation limits of the organic matter into biological gas
that change from 70% and 90% of the top biodegradability depending on
the sewage condition. Low levels of transformation into biogas can be
due to low temperatures, to too short hydraulic retention times (or
excessive organic loads) depending on the process temperature, to bad
hydrodynamic functioning of the reactor with formation of dead areas
and bypass flows between the inlet and the outlet or to the presence
of high-concentrated antibiotic or inhibiting substances.
A futher 12,5% reduction in the organic matter that can be turned into
biogas results from the sewage pretreatment operations (screening)
required to remove the rough solids that could form crusts on the
surface of the unmixed reactors. In order to reckon the yield of
biogas it is necessary to use the stoichiometric analysis: we produce
0.35 l of methane from every g of COD under standard conditions
(volume reckoned at 0°C and absolute pressure of 1 atm).
Actually, this value must be rectified as a fraction quantifiable on
the average of 5% of the destroyed COD is used for the cellular growth
of the anaerobic biomass in charge of the process.

The conversion factor lowers therefore to 0.33. Since the biogas is
usually measured at different temperature and pressure from the
standard conditions, this value shall be moltiplied by a factor equal
to (273 + T)/273, where T is the temperature in °C, and divided by a
factor equal to (10.33 + P)/10.33, where P is the pressure expressed
in mm of water column (follow the reverse procedure to change a
measure taken under the reactor's conditions into a measure under
standard conditions). But as previously mentioned, the yields of
biogas are often estimated with parameters that can be defined more
easily from the zootechnical point of view, and anyway related to COD,
such as the organic matter in the sewage.
WHY CARRY OUT THE ANAEROBIC TREATMENT OF THE SEWAGE?
Within the framework of constant and extreme energy requirements and
high environmental risk, today the anaerobic treatment with biogas
recycling represents a very interesting system having various
advantages:
1) Production of energy: the anaerobic treatment under controlled
conditions leads to the degradation of the organic matter and to the
production of biogas. The cogeneration of electricity and heat by
means of the biogas burning is economically advantageous for both the
company private consumption and the transfer to a third party which is
stimulated by the new regulations about the production of energy from
renewable sources.
2) Abatement of smells and polluting emissions (NH3 and CH4): the
smelly substances that can result from the process (hydrogen sulphide,
mercaptan, ammonia) are burnt together with the biogas.
3) Sewage stabilization: the abatement of the carbonaceous organic
load resulting from the anaerobic digestion gives the sewage a
sufficient stability also in the next storing periods; the slowdown in
the degradation and fermentation processes leads to a reduction in the
production of smelly compounds.
4) Reduction in the pathogenic charge: the anaerobic digestion in
mesophily can partially reduce the pathogenic charge in the sewage, if
any. But in thermophily it is possible to get the full hygienization
of the sewage with the total destruction of the pathogens.

TYPES AND WORKING OF THE BIOGAS PLANTS
The most common biogas plants can be referable to 3 different types
having separate special characteristics and therefore suitable to
different specific company requirements:
1) "Plug-flow"-type ditch plant
The "plug-flow" plant is characterized by the greatest simplicity of
installation.
Main features: this anaerobic digestion process can be effectively
used for both the livestock sewage treatment and the stabilization of
the sludge resulting from the flotation of the agricultural-livestock
sewage wastes. In case of use for the livestock sewage, it is
necessary to separate in advance the rough solids that are not
technically biodegradable within a reasonable time requirement, and to
use the manure liquid content only in the anaerobic process.
Consequently, the digester is lacking in any internal mixing devices
and the ditch conformation shall be preferred.
In case of flotation sludge, the digester stages will not be
separated. In case of very livestock sewage wastes, the separation
effect of the settleable solids from the sewage liquid content, due to
the lack of agitation in the digester, will bring about an
advantageous rise in the retention time of the solid content compared
to the liquid content. Actually, this phenomenon will allow to remove
the liquid content - with the substances readily available for the
digestion - quickly from the digester and to keep in the digester the
more complex molecules for long, by allowing the bacteria to break
them down and to make them available for the transformation into
biogas. Anyway, the solids will reach the digester outlet by means of
the rising motions due to the biogas and the heating coil near the
bottom of the digester, with the forward motion caused by the
positioning, in the starting and final sections of the digester, of
the induction and drain piping of the fresh and digested sewage.
Suitable for: essentially for medium- and large-sized farmings that
plan to produce energy for their direct requirements and to sell it to
the network managing company in case of surplus only. Generally
speaking, it is also suitable for those who shall considerably reduce
the environmental impact of their zootechnical activity by means of
the flotation and the biological purification of the wastes to be
dumpled into surface hydric bodies.
Process stages: in order to get the highest production of biogas it is
necessary that the digester receives `fresh' sewage; for that reason,
the sewage produced in the farming shall be removed from the livestock
shelters as quick as possible. The sewage is conveyed to a collection
pre-tank and then moved to the separation stage by means of a special
pumping station.
The mechanical separation of the liquid content from the rough solids
is almost always necessary to remove from the sewage those parts that
cannot be biodegraded within the expected digestion times, such as the
vegetable waste and the coat that tend to come to the surface because
of the biogas rising and to form a twisted cellulose crust on the
sewage surface that occupies useful volume and can clog the digester
in the long run. The solid fraction separated before the digester can
be composted or collected and used as amender on the farmlands, while
the liquid fraction, rich in organic matters, will feed the digester
which has usually a rectangular cross-section with one or more
parallel ditches. The anaerobic digestion of the sewage takes place in
a special digestion thanks to the activity of bacteria that crush the
complex molecules by producing methane, carbon dioxide, water and
hydrogen sulphide.
The aforesaid biological activities depend on many factors, such as:
pH, temperature and residence time of the sewage in the digester. In
particular, when the digestion temperature decreases it is necessary
to assure a longer residence time (HRT) of the sewage in the digester.
Consequently, in psychrophilic conditions, it is advisable to provide
for a HRT of at least 60 days, while in mesophilic conditions it is
possible to provide for a HRT of 18-20 days.
According to the above conditions, the energy yield of the plant gives
very good results in any season. In order to work under thermally
controlled conditions, the digester walls shall be suitably insulated
and the inside of the digester shall be heated and kept at the process
temperature by a heat exchanger situated near the bottom and
consisting of stainless steel pipes where the hot water resulting from
the burning of the cogenerated biogas flows.
The produced biogas is directly collected in the upper part of the
digester by means of a gasometric dome covering and, if necessary,
other gas-collecting pressure-switch dome coverings.
The gasometric dome has a semicylindrical shape or spheric cap and it
consists of three superimposed membranes made of PVC-coated polyester
fibres and welded with a high-frequency electronic system.
The inner membrane is used to hold the biogas in a chamber in contact
with the sewage; the side edges of the intermediate one are in contact
with the outside and it prevent the biogas from mix with the air
between the intermediate membrane and the external one which is always
blown up.
The air chamber is kept under pressure by a control unit and by valves
that let the air come in or out by keeping always the biogas at a
pressure of 200 mm H2O, regardless of the quantity of biogas. The
feeding of the burners is therefore regular and the external membrane
is always taut, thus bringing about the predictable advantages as to
wind, water or snow.
The pressure-switch membrane covering system has also the following
advantages:
* it spares the separate manufacture of a gasometer;
* it make the maintenance of the digester easier, as it can be
easily removed;
* it assures a high degree of insulation of the digester top;
* it can fit existing tanks;
* it allows to store the biogas at the use pressure of the burners,
by sparing the installation of compressors for the gas;
* it makes it possible to get a more flexible management of the
biogas users thanks to the high volume contained;
* it makes the dehumidification of the gas easier, especially during
the colder months, by means of the condensation water in contact
with the dome wall.
Through a special pipe connected with the gas-collecting covering of
the digester, the gas produced and recycled is conveyed to a
cogeneration plant that burns the biogas and produces electricity and
heat. Some heat is then reutilized to thermostat and to keep the
temperature in the digester. Finally, the sewage coming out of the
digester, stabilized and deodorized, will be collected in one or more
storing tanks, waiting for its agronomic use.
2) Mixed up-flow cylindrical plant
Main features: this anaerobic digestion process uses the manure
as-it-is (liquid content + solid content); consequently, the
cylindrical digestor will be provided with a helical mixing system, an
external timed recirculation pump and a nozzle system on the bottom to
assure the sewage movement and the `up-flow' and crust-breaking
effect. The digester will be daily fed with `fresh' sewage, while the
digested sewage will come out after an average residence time in the
tank of about 20/25 days.
The positioning of the digester below ground level can, within certain
limits, replace the insulation..
Suitable for: farmings that plan to manage the sewage as sole
homogeneous product and to make the best of it from the energetic and
economic point of view, as this system keeps the whole solid fraction
of the manure, thus increasing the biogas production. It can also be
suitable for medium-sized farmings having yet biomasses to be added
and digested together with the manure. This plant too has considerable
environmental advantages, but it is necessary to consider that: the
not-separated sewage shall be managed with suitable machinery during
the pumping stage; the digester needs more electromechanical
components; the plant has a higher power consumption and any additions
of substances containing nitrogen involve the need of a larger land
for the company balance provided for by the agronomic use plan.
Up-flow plant diagram
Process stages: in order to get the highest production of biogas, it
is essential that the digester is fed with `fresh' sewage: for that
reason, the sewage produced in the farming shall be removed from the
livestock shelters as quick as possible. The sewage is conveyed to a
collection, levelling, mixing and lifting pre-tank provided with mixer
and grinding pump, where a modest quantity of biomass in fixed amounts
can be added so as to get a pumpable mixture, with a solid content not
higher than 10% that enriches the sewage for the digester with organic
matter. The anaerobic digestion of sewage with modest quantities of
biomasses takes place in a special digester thanks to the activity of
bacteria that crush the complex molecules by producing methane, carbon
dioxide, water and hydrogen sulphide.
The aforesaid biological activities depend on many factors, such as:
pH, temperature and residence time of the sewage in the digester. In
case of Up-Flow digesters fed with a sewage-biomass mixture, it is
advisable to assure residence times of at least 30-40 days and
temperatures in the mesophilic and thermophilic field. It is also
possible to subdivide the digestion volume into two reactors - a
primary one and a secondary one - which allow more controlled
methanogenic and acidogenic stages.
3) Super-flow plant for ultrathick biomasses
Main features: the anaerobic digestion process uses the manure
"as-it-is" (liquid content + solid content) with addition of some
biomass, even in large quantities, beyond the pumpability limit.
Usually, the plant has two digesters: a primary one and a secondary
one. The cylindric primary digester is provided with a special
horizontal-axis mixer that assures the complete mixing of the sewage
and the biomass. The primary digester is non-stop fed with `fresh'
sewage and biomass according to a fixed feeding plan depending on the
compositions and the characteristics of the various intake
complements; the digested sewage will leave the tank after an average
residence time of about 20 - 30 days and it'll be conveyed to the
secondary digester, where it'll be remixed so as to recover the
remaining biogas. The residence time in the secondary digester is
about 30 - 40 days, with an overall average residence of about 60
days.
In-line digesters assure the best production of biogas in super-flow
plants
The good mixing is crucial in order to get high density in the
digester. The mass can be heated by means of pipings fastened onto the
digester walls.
Suitable for: firms and zootechnical centres having lands set-aside or
anyway a constant availability of biomass over the year that allows to
increase considerably the biogas production and, consequently, the
electric power, thus optimizing the process yield.
Detail of the gas overpressure valve Digester of the gasometric dome
full of biogas
Process stages: in order to get the highest production of biogas, the
sewage reaching the primary digester should be "fresh" and the
energetic structure quality of the biomass should be entire. The
produced sewage is conveyed to a collection, levelling, mixing and
lifting pre-tank provided with mixer and grinding pump that makes the
sewage uniform and feeds the cylindrical primary digester. A special
dosing augered hopper feeds the biomass and, by means of a specific
programme, loads in the digester the necessary quantity of matter to
assure a good digestion process. The biogas produced in anaerobic
conditions is directly collected in the upper part of the digester/s
through a gasometric dome covering having a globe shape with variable
volume. Through a pipe connected with the gas-collecting covering of
the digesters, the produced and collected gas is balanced, cooled,
dehumidified, filtered and conveyed to the cogeneration units that
burn the biogas, thus producing electrical power and heat. Then, the
outgoing sewage stabilized and deodorized will be collected as it is -
or after separation - in one or more storing tanks, waiting for its
agronomic use.

BIOGAS PROCESSING AND USE
Biogas purification
The biogas processing is crucial to assure the correct working of
cogenerators.
Nel biogas sono presenti piccole quantitą di alcuni composti che, a
causa delle loro proprietą ossidanti o di incombustibilitą, devono
essere eliminati per favorire un buon processo di combustione mediante
le seguenti tecniche:
* Filtering with gravel or sand filters, necessary to remove the
suspended solids which consist basically of organic matter, fats
and any foams, before the suction of the recirculation compressors
or the auxiliary compressors of the boiler and the gas engines;
* Dehumidification; the temperature of the biogas coming out of the
digester is at least 35°C, with a high humidity degree that causes
the water vapour to condense; as a consequence, condensation traps
and sumps are arranged along the piping. But to prevent the water
vapour from condensing in the burning chamber it is necessary to
remove the humidity drastically by means, for instance, of a
condensation plant consisting of a direct-expansion refrigerator,
a tube-bundle water/biogas exchanger and a coalescent filter where
the steam is condensed and then removed through a manual or
automatic drainage;
* Desulphurization; necessary to abate the sulphur-based compounds,
it can be carried out by means of chemical filters full of iron
oxides that cause the precipitation of the compounds and,
consequently, their extraction; by means of washing towers that
execute a reverse-flow scrubbing of the gas with water and ferric
oxide; or by means of biological desulphurization with the direct
injection of some air - about 5-10% of the gas - in the digester,
so as to allow certain bacterial strains to trigger a sulphur
biological precipitation reaction.
The adjustment and control systems are crucial to assure the best
performance of the plant.
Uses of the biogas
After the necessary treatments, the biogas can have two applications:
a) the production of heat only;
b) the cogeneration of electrical power and heat.
Burning for the only production of heat:
Plants with simple technologies are used; it is enough to use a common
gas heat generator consisting of a burner where the combustible
material and the comburent burn by producing thermal energy and a heat
exchanger where the results of the burning transfer the produced heat
to a heat-transfer fluid. The biogas is treated like the natural gas,
but some changes are made in the burner for the gas inlet, the
combustible material/comburent mixing and the use of more resistant
materials to corrosion for the heat exchanger and the burner..
Cogeneration for the contemporaneous production of electrical power
and heat:
This is the contemporaneous production of heat and mechanic energy
immediately transformed into electric power (it's an only integrated
system called `total energy system') starting from the primary energy.
This energy production system allows a considerable energy saving
compared to the separate production of the same quantities of heat and
electrical power/mechanical energy; it is possible to exceed a 90%
efficiency (30% of electrical efficiency and 60% of thermal
efficiency).
Two different machinery are used:
o reciprocating endothermal engines
o microturbines
For the cogeneration with reciprocating endothermal engines we use
engines with Otto cycle or modified Diesel cycle, consisting of the
following components:
* reciprocating endothermal engine that, besides producing the
mechanical energy, produces also the thermal energy;
* alternator - usually asynchronous - for the production of
three-phase alternating current;
* thermal regenerator consisting of a heat exchanger that recovers
the heat produced by the whole system, from both the waste gas and
the engine cooling circuit and the lubricating oil;
* electric panel that allows to use the produced electrical power
and to interface with the national electric power line.
For the cogeneration with microturbines we use innovatory small-sized
gas turbomachinery deriving from aeronautics and consisting of the
following main components:
* gas turbine and regenerator;
* current generator electrical system;
* heat exchanger on the exhaust gases;
* operation and control system.
For powers over 50 Kw, the transfer to the electric network is usually
admitted for average voltage only.
Cogenerators can work as follows:
* parallel to the public mains: all energy produced by the
continuous-running engine at maximum power is transferred to the
company network connected with the external line. The magnetizing
energy is totally absorbed by the network, there are no problems
about peak loads and controls on the produced electric power
concern solely the voltage and the frequency that shall be kept
constant. A drawback of this system is that the cogenerator cuts
out in case of power failure in the mains;
* independent island of the electric power line: typical of places
without public network, or in case of applications that can be
separated from the company network - e.g. purification plants. It
is necessary to have a self-excited generator with a
battery-connected engine starter. The advantage of this system is
that the electric power is assured also in case of blackout in the
public network, but it has two drawbacks: the necessary oversizing
of the cogenerator, as it has to overcome the startings of the
different applications and the necessary uninterruptible power
supply units in case of electronic circuits or equipment that
cannot be disconnected, as the current is temporarily cut off when
the system starts;
* on standby: in case of regular working the cogenerator is
parallel-connected with the public network, while in case of
blackout the cogenerator goes on assuring the power to
preferential lines, after disconnecting automatically from the
network, and it supplies power according to the application's
requirement; once the public network is reactivated, the system
reverts to the parallel connection.

THE EUROPEAN SITUATION
In Europe, the spread of the anaerobic digestion started in the sector
of the sewage sludge stabilization and at present there are about
2,000 working digesters, about 400 biogas producing plants for the
disposal of the industrial wastewater with high organic load and 500
biogas recovery plants from urban waste dumps. Besides, about 2,500
anaerobic digesters work on livestock sewage in the EU Countries, in
particular in Germany (about 2,000), Denmark, Austria, Italy and
Sweden. In the last year, the anaerobic digestion are becoming more
common in the treatment of the organic content from the separate urban
waste collection, mixed with industrial waste and livestock sewage. In
Denmark, for instance, 25 centralized co-digestion plants are
currently working and they dispose of about 1 million tons of
livestock sewage and 325,000 t of industrial organic residues and
urban waste every year. As to grants and funding for the realization
of biogas plants within the European Countries, the current situation
is outlined below:
* Luxembourg: a subsidy equal to 60% of the investment cost and up
to 0.10 EUR/kWh for the sold energy;
* Belgium: no subsidy for the realization, but the base revenue for
the sale of the energy is 0.07 EUR/kWh besides a bonus of 0.05 EUR
per thermal kWh for the district heating, thus reaching a total
maximum revenue on the sold energy of 0.12 EUR/kWh;
* France: the energy transferred to the power network is paid only
0.05 EUR/kWh with consequent lack of interest in the farm sector;
* Holland: at present the revenue for the sale of the energy is 0.08
EUR/kWh, but the regulations that should come into force within
this year provide for incentives similar to the German ones;
* Germany: this is the European Country where the anaerobic
digestion has been given the most substantial boost thanks to
incentives starting from a minimum of 25% of the investment cost
and prices for the electric power produced from biogas assured for
20 years that are summed up in the following table:
REVENUES fUp to
150 kw
From 150 to 500 kw From 500 kw to 5 Mw
Base 0,11 0,09 0,08
Biomass 0,06 0,06 0,06
District heating 0,02 0,02 0,02
Technological efficiency 0,02 0,02 0,02
MAXIMUM POTENTIAL REVENUE 0,21 0,19 0,18
The strong biogas production incentive focuses entirely on the
energetic goals, without seeing to the environment and, in
particular, to the resulting impact of nitrates on the land,
also thanks to the less concentration of livestock compared to
Italy.
______________________________________________________________________
THE ITALIAN SITUATION
In our Country, especially in those areas with a strong inclination to
zootechnics, the situation is quite different: the environment and, in
particular, the nitrogen load have a substantial importance and can
play an essential role in prmoting or limiting the development of the
`zootechnical' biogas. Many reasons - related to both environmental
issues and energy efficiency - can drive the farmer to the biogas,
with the possibility to use also the biomasses resulting from
set-aside surfaces, thus exploiting them with no-food cultivations
such as fodder maize, grass, sorghum and the like.
In 1999 a research showed that in Italy 72 biogas plants worked with
livestock sewage. Five of which were centralized plants and 67 were
company plants. Almost all plants are situated in the Northern regions
(39 in Lombardy, 7 in Emilia-Romagna, 12 in Trentino Alto Adige).
At the end of 2004, the plants were more than 100, among which
approximately 70 belong to the low-cost simplified type with a plastic
gasometric dome on the storing tank of the livestock sewage.
Most of the plants currently working in Italy have been designed and
consequently dimensioned depending on a standard of energy saving for
the farming, using all the energy produced during the digestion
process for the energy requirements of the farming and, usually, the
relevant house applications.
The installation of cogeneration units in quite spacious room makes
all maintenance easier.
For that reason there are cogenerators that work "in isolation", i.e.
without the possibility of interfacing with the national electric
network in case of energy surplus.
At present, the development of new plant-engineering techniques and
the biomass digestion have improved and increased the biogas
production and the new energy regulations boost the production and
consequently the sale of the energy from renewable sources, thus
modifying the design of the new plants.
Also because of the greater requirement of the farming, farmers
usually choose a network-parallel connection so as to sell the energy
surplus.
This involves other advantages that can be easily assessed, as the
sale of the energy surplus and the green certificates (having a 8-year
validity in Italy) allows the owner to get yearly revenues that reduce
or even halve the investment return time compared to the old plants.
Biomasses Quantity:
Animals' manure 180.000 t/years
Agro-industrial waste 12.000.000 t/years
Abattoir waste 2.000.000 t/years
Sewage sludge 2-3.000.000 t/years
Organic content of urban waste 9.000.000 t/years
Cultivation waste 10.000.000 t SS/years
Energy cultivations 230.000 ha set a side
The above biomasses are currently available in our country: about 120
plants use the sewage sludge coming from the urban sewage treatment
plants, 7 plants use the organc content of the urban waste and some
plants use the agro-industrial waste. In Italy, the regulations and
the incentives to the production of electric power from renewable
sources should boost the development of biogas plants; consequently,
it is necessary to strengthen and to rationalize the systems
exploiting the anaerobic codigestion processes of various biomasses
(livestock and agro-industrial biomasses, energy cultivations and
cultivation waste, sewage sludge and organic content from separate
urban waste collection).
It would be better to boost also the development of anaerobic/aerobic
integrated systems for the combined treatment of sewage and urban
organic waste and other biomasses.
The insertion of vegetable substances with a high dry-matter content
in the fermenter involves technical problems that shall be
specifically faced right from the design phase, as to the biomass
feeding equipment and the requirement of suitable mixing and grinding
systems. The use of ensilages requires a special attention, as they
cause a fall in the pH value within the digester and possible
corrosion of the feeding equipment.
It should be noted that the installation of a biogas production plant
is the same as adding a new breeding with a different type of animals:
the microorganisms, with their own environmental and food
requirements. The farmer shall develop a correct management suitable
to the specific treatment requirements, so as to avoid inefficiency,
failure and disappointment about the revenues from the investment.
How to sell the energy
The energy from renewable sources is sold, upon the producer's
request, to the power network company at the wholesale price of the
electric power transferred from the sole buyer to the supplying
companies. The produced energy can be used as follows:
1) On the market:
* by selling the energy to a suitable end customer or to a
wholesaler by means of a bilateral contract
* by selling the energy on the stock exchange
2) Sale of the produced electric power to the relevant power network
company. A special agreement between Federenergia, Enel Distribuzione,
GRTN, Acquirente Unico and the producers' associations has the purpose
to define the contractual, economic and technical conditions for the
transfer of the electric power.
This agreement has one-year validity and can be renewed; the producer
gives the power network company all the produced energy except for
that used for private consumption.
According to the agreement for renewable source energy plants with
power up to 1MW, the network companies assure the following minimum
prices subdivided into classes: for the first 500,000 kWh/year, 95
EUR/MWh; from 500,000 kWh to 1million kWh/year, 80 EUR/MWh; from 1
million kWh to 2 million kWh/year, 70 EUR/MWh; over 2 million
kWh/year, the price of the Acquirente Unico (according to times or
undifferentiated).
The application of the aforesaid minimum prices assure the covering of
the expenses of the small-sized plants that use renewable sources but
cannot compete or take part in the market; besides, since the power
collected by the network companies is paid according to the real
input, the producers are not bound to submit the production plans and
consequently the amounts due for the unbalance are not applied. The
costs to be paid to the network company are 120 EUR/year for each
plant so as to cover the administrative costs and 0,5% of the exchange
value of the collected energy; if the network company manages also the
contracts, it is necessary to pay 120 EUR/year for each plant and 0,5%
of the exchange value of the collected energy.
Green certificates
The green certificates are real negotiable securities on the energy
market, issued and controlled by the National Conversion Network
Company (GRTN); they are used to boost the production of energy from
renewable sources and to certify that the energy at issue comes from
renewable source plants, such as sun, wind, water, geothermal sources
and the conversion of vegetables or organic and inorganic waste into
electric power.
To be entitled to the certification, the plants shall be qualified by
GRTN as "Renewable Energy Source Plant" (IAFR); the biogas plants
using organic waste and/or vegetables to produce the electric power
are therefore entitled to the IAFR qualification and to the green
certificates that can be obtained according to the following
procedure:
* ask the GRTN for the IAFR qualification;
* after getting the qualification, ask the GRTN for the issue of
green certificates for the current year;
* the next years, together with the application, it is necessary to
submit the UTF a declaration proving the real production.
To get a green certificate, it is necessary to produce at least 50,000
kWh every year, but for small-sized plants a production of electric
power over 25,000 kWh/year is enough for a green certificate. The
certificates are given to the qualified plant for 8 years after its
coming into use; it is possible to get new certificates for another
8-year period subject to modernization and strengthening of the plant.
At present, a proposal is under consideration: a 12-year period for
the issue of the green certificates. The application for certificates
is provided for by the law, since the national power system is bound
to receive a share of energy from renewable sources equal to 2.35%,
increased by a yearly 0.35% from 2004 to 2006, while the increase will
be the same or higher for the next three-year periods 2007-2009 and
2010-2012.
The technical condition for the transfer of the energy shall be agreed
upon with the supplying agency.
The price of the green certificates is variable and it is set from
year to year according to the granted incentives; as to 2004, the set
value was 9.739 eurocent/kWh and it applies to the whole production,
for both private consumption and transfer. It should be noted that the
green certificates in possession of the biogas plant owner and the
energy produced by the same plant can be separately sold, as the green
certificates are paid according to the whole energy production, while
only the electric power sold to the national power network is paid;
the national network profits by the dispatching priority as this
energy is produced from renewable sources. Besides, the construction
of an IAFR plant are considered as utilities, according to the
legislative decree 387/03. Therefore, after getting the CPI from the
Fire-prevention Department of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs,
all works related to the construction and management are subject to a
sole permission which is issued by the regional government or by
another delegated party; furthermore, the IAFRs with a power below 3MW
are considered as minor air polluting activities.
